| We woke up in: | Homer, AK | We're going to sleep in: | Eklutna, AK |
Shel: We got up in Homer and started heading up toward Valdez. Along the way we planned to stop at Thunder Bird Falls and Matanuska Glacier. Our stop at Thunder Bird Falls included a 2 mile hike into the falls. Then dinner and we stopped at a nearby campground. The campground was not well marked and we probably spent an hour tring to find a site. Geni: Homer was overcast when we left and we headed toward Thunder Bird Falls. Stopped to do food shopping. Talked to woman by deli and she had grown up in Amherst, MA. How coincidental is that to be in Alaska and both women standing at a deli counter from MA. Took side trip to Whittier because Roland wanted to ride through the longest train / auto tunnel in Alaska. Then we went to Thunder Bird Falls which was in Eklunta, to see the falls which wasn't much to see. Went looking for nearby campground and drove in circles for a while. Finally Shel and Roland investigated and were gone for half hour. It was "bear country" so I didn't want to go looking for him and was hoping for the best. A nice woman walking her dog, at 9 PM, through these wooded areas, told them where to go and we settled in for a really good night's sleep. |

I just love looking at the sky. In this case, it was dark clouds on one side and blue skies on the other. |

Entrance to tunnel to Whittier |

Inside tunnel. The tunnel was first used for trains only. Then it was converted to auto use. Since it is narrow, traffic is one way at a time. Trains still use the tunnel alos and auto traffic is topped then. |
