Sheldon and Geni's 2018 Trip to Alaska
Today is: July 18 (19,781)
We woke up in: Chitina, AK We're going to sleep in: Valdez, AK

Shel: I came through the Thompson Pass 25 years ago and thought it beautiful. Today went though the pass agin and it isn't as great as I remembered. Maybe all the places we've been and all the things we've seen just put it into perspective. Don't get me wrong, it is still very nice! We found a nice reasonabley priced campground about 6 miles out of town. The campgrounds in town are much more expensive and look like glorified parking lots.

Geni: Thought it would be a nice reminder of what the roads and scenery are like as we travel. Lots of glacier or just snow covered mountains; mountains everywhere; and beautiful skies (when not overcast!). Roland was leading, so his RV is always in the pictures, but it shows perspective of how small we are compared to the mountains. Got to Valdez and was surprised at how small a town it is.

Our roadside 'campground' at Chitina. Note dirty truck!

These are the kinds of turnoffs that you can stop at to take pictures (sometimes even pull over and stay for night)

The poles on the side of the road were for the snowplows to be able to find the road in winter. I understand that now they are guided by GPS in the pass.

As it turns out I would have made it to the gas station, but the though of runnng out of gas while going down a mountain just didn't sit well with me. Couldn't imagine losing power steering and brakes!!

This is a spot with waterfalls - first one is called bridal veil

First campfire, because it was always cold or raining. Had to celebrate with marshmallows! Tasted really good without little kids to have to worry about burning themselves!
