Today is: | July 26 | ||
We woke up in: | Skagway, AK | We're going to sleep in: | Skagway, AK |
Shel: We went on a train ride from Skagway to the summit of White Pass in the morning. Roland went out fishing in the morning ( but didn't get to keep anything he caught as they were too small)! The afternoon was spent shopping (not by me) and trying to fix Roland's leaking gray tank. Nice dinner out, grocery shopping, getting gas, etc so we'll be ready for our departure in the morning. Our next stop will be Hyder, AK hoping to view some bears! Geni: Nice morning on the train to White Pass up in the mountains. Learned a bit about Skagway's history and the troubles building the railroad over the mountain pass. Had interesting afternoon in a jewelry store making friends with the owner! More cruise ships in today - one a Disney Alaska ship. I'm hoping to see bears too when we get to Hyder. But the journey will take two to three days, going through small towns, in and out of Canada. |
Can't tell by picture, but there is a bus on this road, which is the only road in and out of Skagway. . .scary drive |

One of bridges built through mountain pass |
This is view of old bridge built to bring train and supplies for klondike gold rush. No longer in use. . .thankfully |
This is original trail on side of mountain (yellow) for miners to carry their supplies all the way up the mountain . Canada would not let them in unless they had a years suppplies. They carried it up this trail 100 pounds at a time. |
The border between US and Canada lies somewhere near the top at White Pass |
Inside the train - conductor coming through - Shel lulled by the train chugging on the tracks |

Lake up on the mountain pass |
Train making its way back down to Skagway. Note steep mountain side |
A few of these pictures of old bride - we were amazed that it was able to be built and still is standing after all these years |
This bridge was the highest span in the country when it was built. It is now not in use and has fallen into disrepair. |
Love being so high up, the clouds are almost touchable |
Skagway river - rapids down the mountain |
Goldrush cemetary where local heroes and villans buried |
Roland is working on his tank and I'm giving pointers! |
