| We woke up in: | Banff | We're going to sleep in: | Grand Cache, AB |
Shel: We got an early start and it's a good thing we did. We headed up route 93 toward Dawson Creek, which is mile post 0 of the Alaskan Highway. Along the way we ran into a snow flurry. We were delayed for about 20 minutes while workers were up on a cliff scaling the loose rocks down. We stopped in the Columbia Icefield Discovery Center, decided not to take the bus tour as it was $100 per person. We took the shorter route from Jasper toward Dawson Creek only to find out there was a massive contruction project. Two of the highs were so steep and long I was down in first gear for them. It was a tiring day of driving and we went just over 300 miles. Geni: Every turn we took on the drive was more awesome than the one before. The textures (snow, trees, sand, rocks), the colors (green, white, red, grey) and the formations were just incredible. Sometimes it looked like it was just painted scenery. Pictures don't show how beautiful it was. Of course there were plenty of monotonous scenery and construction delays, but many of the views were breathtaking. It was windy and cold today, between the 30's, 60's. We put on our winter jackets. Hope Alaska isn't too cold, because we'll miss summer. . Few more days of driving and we'll be there. Shel and Roland are doing a great job making our way to Alaska. Tiring day. Going to sleeep at 10:00 and the sky isn't even dark yet! Nice campground. |

Just as soon as we left the campgound this morning we encountered some elk on the road |
The highway has tall fences to try to keep the wildlife off the highway. They put these bridges in every so often just so the animals can get across the road. |
|
We were held up here for about 20 minutes while a crew was scaling the rocks - see next picture. |

People shuttled to icefield. Decided to wait for Alaska to try this |

Traffic stopped for goats coming down hill and crossing busy street |
At one point, they crossed so close to the front of the truck we could only see the top couple of inches of their horns |
