| Shel: Started out the morning seeing I had left the truck's drivers winow open and it rained last night. Needless to say I had a wet ass. Once we got past that, it wasa quick drive over to the Gettysburg national Military Park. Very nice indeed. We did the auto tour with 16 stops and most of the time it wasn't raining! Then watched a movie and viewed a huge panorama at the visitors center ( something like 40' high and 377' long). I highly reccomend going to the park. Geni: Visiting Gettysburg National Military Park was much more than I could have imagined. I thought it would be an expansive field with some historical markers at various places along the way. It was a magnificent, thoughtful memorial to a historic battle. The museum and exhibits inside provided so much history and artifacts, as well as a movie and panoramic view of the battlefield. You could spend days inside. But the grounds had a story to tell also. We took a self guided tour and stopped at many locations. There were hundreds of cannons looking out over the fields, small markers, large statues, monuments with battalian names of all the many state militarys scattered in the woods and along the roads. The honor and respect given to the soldiers on both sides of the battle was so touching. The way thousands upon thousands who died right on the fields were honored was overpowering. We also visited the National Cemetary which is where many of the soldiers and some with unmarked graves are buried. |
