| When you look at a map and see all the squiggly lines, you may not realize just how long they really are. We started off thinking we could do both Taos and Los Alamos in one day easily. Well Taos was much further away than we thought. So we limited what we did there so we could still get to Los Alamos. In los Alamos, I learned that the two atomic bombs dropped in Japan were actually two different technologies. The one that went to Nagasaki was called the 'Fat Man' and was an imploding tech while the first one was a gun style detonation called Little Boy. Driving around out here is interesting as the hills easily go through 1000's of feet in altitude. Many of the areas we have been in are around 7000ft and we have been as high as 12,000ft. Compare that to Mount Washington in New Hampshire which is only about 4700ft. Geni: We listened to a suggestion to take the scenic ride to Taos, which was a mistake because although it wasn't the highway, it was a longer drive up a mountain, sometimes behind slow drivers. The scenic view was lots of small rural towns and homes (some indian pueblo areas) so we were surprised that Taos was a busy, good sized town. The Visitors Center said to go to this picturesque gorge and to some museums. We went to the gorge (about 7 miles outside town), which was interesting, but not as beautiful as the picture they showed us. Decided to go to Los Alamos instead of museums, so off we went again for an hour and a half. Lots of driving, but glad we went. |
