Sheldon and Geni's 2015 Camping Trip
Today is: September 12
We woke up in: Elizabethtown, KY We're going to sleep in: Elizabethtown, KY

Shel: Well, a little more relaxing of a day. We had breakfast and then went up to Louisville. Our first stop was Churchill Downs (ya know, we are real horse people). We toured the museum, then a walking tour and finished up with a tour of the stable area. We also watched 2 races. The tour guide said horses go from 0 to 40 MPH in 3 strides - impressive. We headed downtown to check out a glass blowing place and watched them hand blowing glass. Then went to watch a movie on Kentucky, but wa too late.

Geni: Went to Churchill Downs, visited the Kentucky Derby Museum at the site and got to tour the "barn and backside" of churchill downs. Ate at the cafe there and had some authentic kentucky food. Also got a random free cocktail that was either southern hospitality or very odd (tasted like a cape codder). Drove around Louisville looking for a one of a kind state movie that wasn't were it was supposed to be, and when we found where it was supposed to be, the last showing was earlier in the day. The AAA books sometimes get it wrong, but, still, they are a good reference. The glass blowing was interesting to watch.

The Museum has replicas of everything. These are stalls horses are placed in to race

With American Pharoah, 2015 Triple Crown Winner

Simulated racing track. I tried to win, but came in last

Tour showed us paddocks on right where horses walk from during Kentucky Derby race

Better and best seats. Millionaires' row and corporate in upper tiers

View from fence.

Just having some fun at starting gate

Have races almost every day. Viewed them from our Barn and Backside Tour

This view is seen by employees and their families

The infield area is mobbed with people during Derby. They can't see a thing but have to watch it on big screens

The handlers ride beside the jockeys to keep the horses calm. The handlers groom and care for the horses, the jockeys just ride them

Assistant starters (in green) help get horses into starting gate

And they're off. . . actually was exciting to see them take off and the race wasn't even of any significance. Must be so exciting during Kentucky Derby.

During the backside tour, we were told there were about1400 horses are stabled in these paddocks.
