Sheldon and Geni's 2011 Camping Trip
Today is: October 16
We are in: New Orleans, LA

Shel: Guess my memory isn't what it ust to be :) I remembered this leg of the trip being 1016 miles according to maps.google.com. What I forgot was that it was from Key West to New Orleans not from Tampa to N.O. So we started from Tampa thinking we had two 500 mile days - we did 550 yesterday. When I plugged in the campground in New Orleans, it seems we only have 167 miles to go. Nice surprise (read screw-up)

The campground was a very nice surprise. I had looked at it on the google satellite photos and it just looked like a parking lot. It is actually all pavers - very nicely laid out with manicured lawns in-between sites. Free WiFi and cable. Each site has a nicely lit uitlity post with water, electric, and cable. It is gated and has security round the clock. It isn't cheap, but only a couple of blocks from the French Quarter.

Geni had a great Bloody Mary on the boat and then we were drinking a real nice local beer.

Geni: In New Orleans! Campground is really nice and it's close to French Quarters, so we can walk. Except, on our way back this evening, a woman who was near us and walking home from work, told us not to walk these streets at night. We walked to her truck and she offered to drive us back to the campground.

Earlier, when we arrived in New Orleans, we did walk to the French Quarter and decided to take a steamboat ride -- two hour trip. It was enjoyable. We met some women from Washington, DC who told us some good places to eat. We ate dinner at Cafe Maspero, where we got first taste of New Orleans food. Then we walked around Royal St. which had shops and where we saw a band playing in the streets for a wedding party that was walking behind them. That was our second bride/groom that we saw today -- the first was having their reception on the steamship and stood in front of us in line.

We went onto Bourbon St. and walked by an area called Musical Legends Park, where a nice lady offered to take our pic. We listened to some great bluesy music for a while and I talked to this woman who had to relocate to Houston for six months because of Katrina,

Welcome to Louisiana

Bridge to get to New Orleans - over 3 miles long

Great campground

Naches - one of few steam powered paddle wheels

The paddle wheel !

This is a 'roll-on roll-off' ship. It actually has a ramp that extends from the stren so that vehicles can drive right into the ship to load or unload.

These barges transport rocks up river to build levies. It ain't New England where we just grow rocks!

Headquarters of Gen. Jackson/behind monument to War of 1812

Dinner - good!

Music and dancing in the streets

Love the balconies!

Bourbon St. - we think!

Statues - Fats Domino/Louie Armstrong - Music Legends Park

Steamship Willie band - great sound

Bourbon St. at Night - honky tonk - makes Duval St. (Keys) seem tame!
