Sheldon and Geni's 2011 Camping Trip
Today is: October 2
We are in: Charlston, SC, Lake Aire Campground

We are in a really nice campground but there is a train that runs nearby and we did hear it at 4 A.M.Surprisingly, our alarm went off just before the train went by, so we are trying the campground again tonight to see if we will wake up to another 4 AM train.

Went to Charleston today and walked around the town.Shel was using his gps as we walked and we ended up walking over 10 miles today. We walked along the waterfront, which had some nice fountains thern over to the Slave Market, which was closed. The Market, where the slaves were sold from the ships, is on one of the oldest streets of the city as the street was still cobblestoned. I really wanted to see that.

We walked through two house tours- the Nathanial Russell house which had a winding spiral staircase and many rooms filled with period furniture. It was interesting to walk through, however, after we scurried over to the last of the day's viewing of the Aiken-Rhett building, I found what I wanted to see. It was called an urban plantation house as it had lots of rooms and a stable area, slave quarters and a beautiful sprawling porch. That was a self guiding audio tour so it really seemed like you were feeling the history of the place. The house has not been restored, so the furniture and everything in it is original, but you can see all the years' delapidation of what once was.

Unfortunately, the only place Shel wanted to see --- the Hunley submarine exhibit -- was only a weekend tour, so we missed it!! Evidently, I didn't hear him mention when he mumblled early in the day that it was only a weekend tour. We didn't get out of the A-R house until 5:00 when it was too late. I never heard him say that and Ihad planned tomorrow around the Hunley, not knowing it wasn't available, so I did feel terrible, but he doesn't seem to mind!

Missed our WalMart stopovers, so we stopped to get a couple of things and went back to the camper to relax. We had had a good lunch -- lots of shrimp!!

No mosquitoes here but I am still itchin'

Shels version; We got up and went into Charleston finally finding the visitors center. The first problem of the day was the ducks in the campground didn't want to get out of our way. The only parking was in a prking garage with 6'10" clearance and my truck requires 6'. We ducked under every beam :) Then Geni made me walk over ten miles. It seems like the first mile was all in the market area. At least the lunch was good. So it wasn't enough that we walked all that way in town, we had to stop at Walmart and Geni dragged me all over the store. Wine, cheese, crackers and pistachios for dinner! We have pumkin ice cream for dessert.
