Geni:The mosquitoes here are heinous!! They are dive bombers looking to devour!! The rangers told us that there is an epidemic of mosquitoes due to Hurricaine Irene. The moisture allowed them to thrive and there has been very little spraying done. I've killed a couple dozen just tonight. They are easy to find because they attack!! Our evening past time is killing mosquitoes and doing the blog! Other than that, we had a wonderful day (the mosquitoes aren't out during the day!). We went to Corolla Island, which is in the northern part of the Outer Banks. We climbed the stairs to the top of theCurrituck Beach Lighthouse which was over 150 feet. We took an audio tour of the Whale Head Hunting Lodge, a home built by the Pullman train heirs. We really got to explore the whole house which was nice, because most places don't let you do that. It wasn't a Newport Mansion, but it certainly had many rooms and also servant quarters. We saw a movie at a Wild Life Preserve which talked about how the Outer Banks has changed over the many years, both physically and economically. It was an area lush with ducks and geese for hunting, then bass fishing, but both industries died out. Went to Wright Brothers Monument in Kills Hill, which used to be part of Kitty Hawk. We went to eat at the Lone Cedar Lodge which gets their fish locally and will even prepare your own fish that you caught if you clean it first! It was delicious. Saw the sunset and looked at one more lighthouse before we beelined it into the camper for the night (and are killing mosquitoes, but almost all of them are gone!) Shel: Hurricane Irene forced water up the sound flooding many areas. Some of these areas were mosquito infested swamps. The swamp water and mosquitos traveled all over the place infecting many areas that usually don't have them. Theny have sprayed once and will do so again in the next couple of days.
