Between mosquitoes and Hurricaine Irene, the Outer Banks just were not as hospitable as they should have been. We missed out on going to Ocracoke Island because it was hard to get there from here and today the mosquitoes were swarming even during the day. We went to Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, but couldn't walk the area to see the original site of the "lost colony" because it was in the woods. We did see an interesting and informative movie about the history of the settlemen which led to the mystery of what happened to them. We left that area to walk around the downtown (Manteo) -- no woods, very few mosquitoes. The store owners were just getting back to business from Irene and just starting to reopen their stores. Earlier today we went to Jockey Ridge State Park, which has two of the highest sand dunes on the East Coast. They are more than 100 feet high and many hang gliders come here to take off. We also went back to the Wright Brothers Memorial to see what we missed yesterday. Lots of walking today. Leaving in the morning for Charleston, SC - sure hope they don't have mosquitoes. |
