Sheldon and Geni's 2013 Camping Trip
Today is: September 1
We woke up in: Kimball, SD We're going to sleep in: Hermosa, SD

We survived last night! We slept really well. There were no other customers at our campground. We drove two hours to Wall Drug. We went there because there were so many billboards talking about it, we figured we just had to stop. It is a whole town of touristy shops with restaurants. We fell for it! We split a home made donut (good) and 5cent coffee that they are famous for. The drive was straight road and only farmhouses for two and 1/2 hours. The farms had to be hours from each other. No neighbors close by, no stores, no schools?

We finally passed through Rapid City and civilization and then another half hour to our campground. We are now in mountain time zone. I can't find a supermarket or a mall around here, but plenty to see. We went to Custer State Park and went on a scenic drive. It was almost like driving up Mt. Washington because the roads were kind of narrow and windy, but when we got closer to the top we did see some great rock formations.

Then we went to Crazy Horse Monument and saw an interesting film about the sculptor. They have big plans for the monument and the grounds - buildings for a university, medical training, conferences. The problem is they won't take government money and are relying on the public, so all this good intention will probably take many generations.

We also went to Mt Rushmore. It looks so small compared to any picture I have ever seen. Actually it is about the size of half the head of Crazy Horse Monument. And, like all these places, the area is all built up -- there is a gift shop and an amphitheater. We were there for the evening ceremony. It was very patriotic with a film about the four presidents and an honor to our veterans who were asked to come to the stage.

Just love all the different green landscape

Drug store in '30's offered free ice water to travellers and after
our long drive, I can see what a great marketing idea it was
