We went to Spring Green, a couple miles away, to see Frank Lloyd Wright's home, Taliesin. We had gone to Taliesin West in Arizona a couple of years ago. We only took the tour of the hillside home, just because the cost of his house is so much and we had seen some pics on the web. Wright's family were Welsh and moved to this area and his parents, aunts and uncles lived and farmed here because it reminded them of Wales. The aunts used this hillside house as a kindergarten and boarding school teaching in a Montessori type method from the early 1900's. Years later, Frank settled here and built his home but used the hillside house as a place to teach architectural students, which it is to this day. Frank was a believer in learn by doing, and as he built up his program, he had his students being mentored by his successful graduates and that his how it is done today. Many of the "fellowship" people are treated as part of the family and live on the property and are even buried in the family plot nearby. Then we went to House on the Rock, which we thought was just another beautifully designed home. Boy were we surprised! It is like a carnival enclosed in buildings. Some strange guy built a house whose main claim is that he has an "infinity" room that juts out mid air over the hillside. The grounds are very pretty, but the house itself is a dark, gloomy, rug covered (floor and wall), low ceiling maze of small rooms. We come to find that the guy never really lived there - it was his 'party' house - it was a living hell to me - like you were really dead, but existing still. It was very depressing to me. Then he decided to build more buildings and he has stored so many collections that you definitely get brain overload. We put some pictures up to get the idea. Glad we went to Taliesin first. |

Hillside House - entrance - Wright believed in using nature - material all local |
Dormitory rooms with natural light from roof lighting their classroom |
He built on side of hill rather than on top of hill so the view wouldn't be disturbed - His designs were nature based - |
Called Romeo/Juliet tower which pumped water. So called because tall part is Romeo and smaller turret is Juliet putting her arms around Romeo |
This is Taliesin - as best as we could see it |
Crazy House on Rock courtyard, which was pretty |
One of the rooms we passed through |
This is Infinity room - we couldn't go to the end though |
This is picture of what it looks like from outside |
Stained glass windows - pretty, but there were alot |
Just one of many many displays of the gun collection |
Faberge eggs |
Scrimshaw - many displays |
A Gull Wing Door Mercedes |
Quite a few of these rooms which are like musical box "rooms" - they play automated music - think player piano times an orchestra |
How could I resist - and check out his shirt - so appropriate |
This is a gigantic (maybe world's largest indoor) carousel - but you could only watch, not use! |
Many room displays of doll houses and collectable dolls as well |
So many miniature displays of circus scenes |
Finally cooled down enough for us to build a fire - plus cook dinner by campfire |
