Today | Strasbourg, Fr - Riquewihr, Fr | ||
We got into Strasbourg earlier than scheduled. That allowed us to do an extra tour of a lovely local park. After lunch we took the bus to R***** (not going to try spelling that again) passing through many small villages. It is a village that dates back to the 1400's and the village center is surrounded by a wall. It was very interesting going through the village on all the cobble stone streets. One of the villages we passed through was significant due to a witch. This women's fiance was slain in a battle and she just went around the town continuannly crying and acting strange afterward. One day when the Romanh soldiers came to attack the town, all the residents hid except for the 'witch'. When the soldiers saw her screaming and carrying on, they got scared and ran away, thinking she was a witch. Therefore she saved the village. The town is "famous" for witch symbols and also Storks which are prevelant in the area. Another village we passed through was called the heart village. Any family that had a single daughter would put a heart symbol on the peak of their roof. Any family with a single son would put a bottle on their roof. I guess the early stages on on-line dating :) |
