Today is: | September 18 | ||
We woke up in: | Boppard | ||
Pronounced bowpard. The first part of the day we cruised up the Mosel river, This region is a UNESCO world heritage site.. This area is known for grapes to make Reisling wine. There were many castles along the river. They would put a chain across the river and when ships came up they'd have to pay a passage fee, the chain would be lowered and they could proceed. Geni: The most relaxing and enjoyable cruise today. We saw so many castles and vineyards along the way to Boppard. The vineyards were covering the sides of the hills all the way down to the shore. The Germans have their own version of the Greek sirens. It's a rock rising above the river which prevented ships from seeing what was around the bend, and distraction caused sailors to crash. They build a statue nearby and called it Lorelei.

Every village had a church |

The grape vines were planted on steep hill sides. The roots would go down several meters to reach water. |
|
A watchtower. they would tell the castle that there was a ship approaching |
|
The Lorelei rock on the right obscured view of the river beyond and therefore caused some mishaps |
Statue of Lorelei |
The only way into the church is through the pub. That encouraged people to go to the service. |
