Sheldon and Geni's 2010 Camping Trip
Today is: October 13
We are in: Grand Canyon, Mather Campground

Woke up early to watch the sun rise at Yavapai Point. Then we took the shuttle to Yaki Point and took pictures of the same grand canyon, but from a different angle. Later in the morning, we took the shuttle to the historic district at grand canyon. We started on the Bright Angel (Lodge) trail and walked about 1/2 mile down toward the canyon. The hike to the bottom would have taken all day. They said that going down takes 2 hours and coming back takes 4 hours because it's all uphill.. Going down was easy, but we knew we wouldn't make it back in one day!

As we were walking down this narrow path, suddenly donkeys were coming up the path. Did I say it was a very narrow path. We are told to move to the right (which is against the canyon wall) and listen to the leader riding the first donkey. We hugged the wall and watched 3 groups of donkeys go by. Someone told us that they were bringing up trash from the Phantom Ranch down below. Which is the worst part of your job -- cleaning the bathrooms or having to ride a donkey on a narrow path up and down grand canyon!!!

We walked around the area and saw some old buildings and hotels. Later we took a ride to get some gas and paid $3.60 a gallon. Then we went over to Imax and watched a movie about the Grand Canyon. Even though we didn't make it down to the bottom of the canyon, the movie brought us down there.

Had dinner at one of the historic hotels, El Tovar, and took the shutle back to the campground. Tomorrow we leave for Mesa Verde.
