Today started off OK. Went to IHOP for breakfast, called Mert but he didn't answer his phone. Then we got lost looking for a camera store - finally found it and then we were on our way. It took quite a while to get to the park. Seemed like forever. Got here a little late so went looking for a camp site. Set up and then found out it was already taken. Evidently each National Park has its own method of assigning / allocating camp sites. In this park, you find a spot that doesn't have a small tag on the post and then take that site. Motor homes will leave a site empty and you have to rely upon seeing the small tag. Oh well.. Had to move to another site that wasn't any where near as nice. All set up and found out we were out of propane. Interesting since both tanks were filled before leaving home. Turns out one tank was still full, but it won't supply propane. Went and refilled the other tank and we are in business. Spent time at the canyon. Tagged along on a Ranger led full moon walk - very interesting. geni: Shel took over the review of the day today -- so I'll just add a few notes. The views at Bryce Canyon are spectacular. We went out in the evening to see the stars and ended up with a Ranger led lecture. She told us that Bryce Canyon isn't really a canyon because it wasn't formed due to a body of water. It is one of only two places where the phenomenon of "freeze-thaw" takes place. (the other place is in Turkey). That means that the weather gets so cold that ice forms and then when it warms up (could happen day by day), it affects the rock formations and they erode little by little over thousands of years. Each formation is kind of unique depending upon the type of rock and how it erodes. They look like little statues and are called hoodoos. The night walk was really informative and kind of scary as we were walking along the path, near the edge of the cliffs in the dark!! Shel enjoyed playing with his new camera lenses and got some interesting night shots.
