Sheldon and Geni's 2010 Camping Trip
Today is: September 26
We are in: Virgin, Utah - Zion River Resort Campground

Guess yesterday was just a busy day at the park, because when we got there today at 9 AM, the main street and the park was pretty empty. A shop owner told me later that it was probably so busy because it was a "free" pass day at the park and there was a wedding and a Saturday festival, so by Sunday, things had lightened up.

Zion is the opposite of Bryce Canyon because you are in the canyon instead of on the rim. However, if you rock climb or hike up the mountain, you can see the views from the top. We did see some rock climbers, by the way. This park does not provide an option for driving yourself -- you must take the shuttles. They have lots of stops along the way where you can walk to observation spots (which are walking uphill) or take actual hiking trails. There was another road that you have to drive through to get to see the checkerboard mountain. We drove through a mile long tunnel that was built into the mountain.

Today lots of people around us were speaking other languages. It felt like we were the foreigners!! There were groups of Asian speaking people as well as French and German. We met a couple of young British guys who said they came from Los Angeles! Guess our national parks are quite the attraction.

We walked through a couple of shops in the town (deserted!) and found a nice place for dinner. Zion wasn't so bad after all.

Shel's comment: Well now that I have the heat working in the camper, it is well into the 90's and the A/C is on! The fridge is having a little trouble keeping up when the A/C is off in the camper.

The shuttle busses are neat as the rea wheels steer. This is not directly controlled by the driver, it happens by 'magic'. Well the hitch bar swivels on the towing vehicle and it moves back and forth as it is pulled sideways by the tow vehicle in turns. The swinging of the tongue must be connected hydralicly or mechanically to the rear wheels of the trailer. The drives say it is a lot of fun to try to back up. Must be sortof like trying to back up a hay wagon.
