Shel: The campground is at about 6000' and 7 miles away from the Rim Drive. Rim Drive is not as scary when you don't have a camper behind you!. It's a light day with only about 100 miles being logged. Tomorrow we're off to Redwood State and National Parks in Northern California. Today our sightseeing was in elevations of 7000 to over 8000 feet. The lake was socked in by smoke from fires to the south of us. Geni: Disappointed to find the clear skies of yesterday were not to be today, although by evening, the view looked better. We rode around to lots of sites and saw a movie that explained how the top of the volcano collapsed and over many centuries the water filled into what is now crater lake. They said the water is pristine because the lake is not fed by any streams or rivers, only by rain and snow. Crater Lake is the deepest lake in America. There is enough water in the lake to provide 700 gallons of water to every person in the world. We went on an sunset hike led by a ranger. We didn't realize the .8 mile hike was going up the side of a mountain. We made it to the top where there was a watchtower and saw the sun set over the cascades mountains. We were over 8,000 feet above sea level. |
