We headed out toward White Sands again today. On the way we stopped at White Sands Missle Range and toured their museum and the rocket display outside the museum. I didn't realize it, but they did a lot of development in photography as that's how they gathered the performance data. We picked up lunch in Alamogordo and returned to the White Sands National Monument for the Sunset Stroll. Geni: Interesting visiting the Missle Range museum. We had to get clearance to be allowed in. This was the place they experimented on the first nuclear bomb. Lots of information about that. There was also history going back to the scouts who explored the land, diaries from early settlers, and stories about both Indian and Troops battles, and then scientific info. I tended towards the history of the land, stories from settlers and their families and Shel loved the other exhibits and displays. Outside there werean impressive display of missiles and the history behind them. It was fun to go back to White Sands. A young ranger took us on a walk, giving us the background of the land. The sunset was lovely. We have had a few stops at border patrol barriers in both Arizona (Tucson) and this part of New Mexico. They haven't detained us in any way, but it does remind you of the problems near the border. |
This was a 1/3 scale model of the 'gadget' also known as the nuclear bomb |
A photo of a photo of the actual bomb |
Presented to the museum as they help create sound effects for the first Star Wars |
One of the remaining V-2 rockets orginally made by the Germans in WWII |
The rockets on display outside were all tested at the White Sands Missle Range |
