We woke up in: | Bridgeport, CA | We're going to sleep in: | Lone Pine, CA |
Today was sort of a travel day. We did 208 miles some of it towing the trailer :). Tomorrow will be Death Valley National Park. We stopped by the visitor's center today and got lots of info about the park and also the town we're staying in. About 10 miles north is the camp where they kept the Japanese people during WWII. We also took a drive down through the desert where they filmed many shows, but it did not have little signs saying ___ was filmed here. The people in the next site this morning said we probably didn't want to take the 5th wheel into the park as there are some tight areas so we're staying about 40 miles outside the pahk. Geni: During that drive from Bridgeport to Lone Pine (142 miles), there were only 4 towns - 2 of them sizeable, but no big shopping malls. There is so much land in the U.S. that is not being used. One of the Japanese Internment camps is here -Manzanar (there are books written about this particular place). They have a movie and a museum telling about the experiences the American Japanese lived through as they were taken from their homes and relocated into camps. It was a dusty, windy area (we felt the wind), that was hot in the summer and cold in the winter. Went down Movie Road where there are areas where movies were filmed. Since they failed to put signs up, all we saw was different rock formations and none of them were recognizeable by us. Shel decided NOT to turn around and we went on an adventure (a maze) of dirt roads through the mountains until he found his way back to a major highway. |
Still can't get over all the unpopulated land |

Manzanar - there were a few barracks standing from what remained |
Although they were being "protected" they were not allowed to leave, thus, the watchtower |
Given housing, education, food, etc., but not their freedom |
|
Miles and miles of rocks and prairie for horses to ride on - but nothing looked familiar to us |
