Sheldon and Geni's 2019 out west
Today is: September 23 (38005)
We woke up in: Lone Pine, CA We're going to sleep in: Lone Pine, CA

Death Valley National Park is much better than expected. The maps show where things are. There are signs. We got a relatively early start and headed down to the park. We stopped in Stove Pipe and then headed to Devil's Golf Course and Bad Water. We continued on for 12 miles thinking we were on a different road. Backtracked and went to Artists Drive, lunch at Furnace Creek, and finally to Zabriskie Point. Great day, lots of photos. We saw a high temperature of 102 in the park, up in the campground it went to about 81. Finished the day off with ice cream!

Geni: Like Yosemite, it took a while to actually get into the Death Valley park. We camp outside the park, but even so, it takes about two hours to get to where you want to be. Staying inside the park grounds would shorten the time, but both parks are not road friendly to big campers. So, it is a lot of driving (about 300 miles in all - back and forth to campground). But we liked Death Valley, which surprised us. The towns and the turnouts were few and far between, but there were some campgrounds, small hotels, a golf course (real one!), gas even, and places to eat. The views, again, were spectacular.

The road goes up and over the mountain (many winding roads!)

Gas was high in the park. It was merely 3.99 back in Lone Pine

Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes

We kept walking through the mountain trail, hoping to see the view, however, it was almost 100 and we after rounding many bends, we decided to turn around

Called Devil's Golf Course because it is the opposite!

For as far as you can see, salt deposits

Badwater Basin - lowest point in North America - see -279

The red circle, shows where sea level sign is compared to where we are

Nice person from California took our picture on the salt flats

Just a sea of salt flats

Called Artists Drive - when sun hits it at right time of day, you can see all the different colors due to the different metal deposits

Zabriskie Point - spectacular mountain formations

Zabriskie Point

Called Father Crowley Vista Point - looks like water, but it's the clouds above
