Sheldon and Geni's 2019 out west
Today is: September 24 (38,301)
We woke up in: Lone Pine, CA We're going to sleep in: Lone Pine, CA

Our second and final day in Death Valley National Park. I like this park alot and there is lots to do. Today we visited a crater, a canyon pass, went up to a spot overlooking the park and then visited some charcoal ovens. Been long days as the park is large, did over 300 miles today, the low fuel light came on as we pulled into the gas station. Some of the roads were rough dirt roads.

Geni: We wanted to see Ubehebe Crater which was formed from a volcano. It was an hour ride up to a mountain, but it was magnificant. Then Shel drove on a rough, rocky road to the top of a mountain up over 6,000 feet high to see another spectacular view . However, the ride up was very bumpy and I was worried if anything went wrong, we would never be found. As it turned out, I had cell service at the top, but on the way up, I did not. It was on a very secluded side of the park. One of the rangers suggested we go, however, they don't seem to tell you the down side of some of these trips. Like they are out of the way or long unpaved roads. We saw the burros that the park considers as intruders on the land as they are not indigineous to the area. Then yet another rocky trip to the charcoal kilns which were used in the 1870's for fuel for mining the metals. So, great scenery but long, bumpy drives.

Volcano crater

That's the winding road that we came up

Titus Canyon - most of the road was closed, and we didn't walk the mile and half to see the canyon in 102 degrees

This also was a bumpy rocky road to get here

Another view of different topography in the park

"towns" few and far between

View from the top of the secluded mountain Aguereberry Point - pic doesn't do it justice

Another view overlooking the park

Finally found the burros

Look so cute, but musn't go near them

Charcoal kilns still standing after more than 150 years

Nice smooth road coming down from mountain
